Who is Josh Schuberth?
With nearly 25 years behind the kit, Josh Schuberth has built a reputation as one of Australia’s most versatile and musically sensitive drummers. Known for his song-first approach, Josh is a drummer who plays for the music — not for the spotlight. His focus is always on feel, groove, and finding the right sound to serve the song.
Drawn to drumming from an early age, Josh left school to study contemporary music before hitting the road as an 18-year-old touring musician. Since then, his career has spanned hundreds of recordings and countless live performances with many of Australia’s leading artists, including Dustin Tebbutt, Fanny Lumsden, Felicity Urquhart, The Wolfe Brothers, Sara Storer, Troy Cassar-Daley, John Williamson, Josh Pyke, Shane Nicholson, Lyn Bowtell, Michael Waugh, The Whitlams, Andrew Swift, Graeme Connors, and Brad Butcher, among others.
Josh’s musical roots lie in singer-songwriter and organic styles — indie, folk, country, rock, pop, and alternative — and his drumming heroes, from Matt Chamberlain to Steve Jordan, have shaped his understated, feel-driven approach. A formally trained musician and engineer, Josh holds a Master’s degree in Recording Arts and brings a deep technical understanding to every project.
From his bespoke recording studio in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, Josh records remote drum sessions for artists around the world. His work also extends into production, mixing, and composition, with credits including music for the Australian crime drama Troppo. Over the years, his collaborations with producers such as Matt Fell and Shane Nicholson have led to enduring creative partnerships spanning more than a decade.
His drumming features on hundreds of recordings that have collectively generated over 420 million streams worldwide and earned more than 50 CMAA Golden Guitar Awards and eight ARIA Awards. He proudly endorses Gretsch Drums, Red Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, and Promark Drumsticks.
Whether live on stage or behind the kit in the studio, Josh’s philosophy remains simple: listen deeply, serve the song, and find the most creative way to bring an artist’s vision to life.
